High school golf: Frauenberger wins 3-way playoff for Bullard titlePalestine Herald-Press, Texas — Palestine Herald-Press, Texas
Feb. 14--JACKSONVILLE -- Grapeland High School golfer Rick Frauenberger opened the 2018 season in thrilling fashion.
Frauenberger won a three-way sudden-death playoff to win the Bullard Invitational last Thursday at Cherokee Ranch.
The tournament was moved from Emerald Bay in Bullard on Wednesday to Cherokee Ranch because of weather conditions.
Frauenberger had been tied with Troup's Jake Smelser and Garrett Esposito of Bullard heading into the extra hole. All three golfers carded 77s.
Grapeland finished fourth overall as a team with a 345 composite score, which was 14 strokes behind front-runner Troup (331). Bullard Red was second.
Palestine placed 13th overall out of 17 teams with a 434, with Austin Seat producing the Wildcats' low round of 105.
Two other Grapeland golfers scored well, with Brayden Cheatham an 80 and teammate Case Boyd 84. Jason Bobbitt (104) and Dylan Duhon (115) rounded out the Sandies' scores.
Mason Ratliff shot 109, with William Quarles 113 and Sam Verines 116 as the remaining Palestine scores.
Grapeland claimed the University Interscholastic League Conference 2A state championship last year with an historic two-day total of 600, and Frauenberger was the medalist.
Girls' turn this week
Palestine's small girls' team will compete either today or Thursday at the Bullard Invitational -- all dependent on weather.
Should the tournament take place today, it will be at Emerald Bay in Teaselville. If it's played on Thursday, Cherokee Ranch will serve as the site.
