NFL free agency news: Raiders waive newly acquired quarterback Christian Hackenberg

Christian Hackenberg’s time with the Raiders is over before it started.

Oakland has waived the 23-year-old quarterback, the team announced Tuesday. The Raiders acquired Hackenberg from the Jets in exchange for a 2019 conditional seventh-round pick in late May.

The Jets selected Hackenberg, a three-year starter at Penn State, in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. But, Hackenberg never played in a regular-season game for New York before he was sent to Oakland.

Hackenberg appeared to criticize the Jets coaching staff before the trade.

"I think there were some times when I threw it really good throughout my first two years here,” Hackenberg said at the time (via NJ.com). “That was the frustrating part for me, is the ups and downs and not knowing why — and not really getting any information from anybody on how to fix that and how to address it."

The Raiders currently have starting quarterback Derek Carr as well as backups Connor Cook and EJ Manuel on their roster.
