Dec. 07--The bench came to the rescue Wednesday for the Siena Heights University women's basketball team. The Saints' reserves combined to score 36 points in a 60-57 road win over Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opponent Northwestern Ohio.
After a tumultuous start to the season, Siena Heights (5-6, 3-3 WHAC) has won five of its past six games.
Clara Waidley's two free throws with seven seconds left in the game gave SHU the 60-57 lead. UNOH (4-8, 1-4) missed a 3-point attempt with one second remaining.
Demi Russell had 18 points, 12 rebounds and two assists off the bench for the Saints. Waidley finished with 12 points off the bench, while starter Alyssa Larson had 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
Siena Heights will travel to face WHAC opponent Lawrence Tech on Saturday.
Siena Heights 65, Northwestern Ohio 63: At Lima, Ohio, the Saints were strong at the free-throw line in the WHAC win.
Siena Heights (4-5, 2-4 WHAC) held on thanks to a 13-for-15 effort from the free-throw line in the second half. The Saints finished the game 18-for-20 from the line.
SHU led by six, 63-57, with 2:09 to play, before UNOH (5-7, 1-4) got it down to one with 1:17 left. Nick Randle then hit a pair of free throws with 24 seconds remaining, but a UNOH free throw made it a two-point game. SHU earned the win after a missed Racers 3-point attempt with seven seconds left.
Josh Winowiecki led SHU with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Keith Jordan had 14 points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists off the bench. Tony Jackson had 12 points, eight rebounds and two assists, while Randle had 12 points and six assists.
SHU will travel to face Lawrence Tech on Saturday.
