Prep report 5/16/18: West blanks BHS in regional soccer semifinal

May 16--Jess Hieb scored two goals in the first half as top-seeded Normal West High School earned a 7-0 victory over No. 8 Bloomington in a Class 2A Normal West Girls Soccer Regional semifinal match Tuesday.

The Wildcats (16-5-3) will meet No. 4 Champaign Central, which scored with seven seconds left to edge Urbana, 3-2, in Friday's 5 p.m. championship match.

Rylee Billington's goal, assisted by Audrey Marsaglia, gave West a 1-0 lead before Hieb converted on a penalty kick. Olivia Peters scored off an Annastacia Hollins assist before Olivia Teplitz-Crawford's unassisted goal gave West a 4-0 advantage. Madison Bergeron and Hieb added goals before the intermission, with Hanna Simmons assisting on both, for a 6-0 lead.

Marsaglia ended the scoring in the second half with Billington getting the assist. The Wildcats had 16 shots on goal to one for BHS (6-13-3).

NCHS tops Moline: Caelyn Steffens' goal nine minutes into the second half, off an assist from Megan Seger, gave top-seeded Normal Community a 1-0 victory over Moline in a Class 3A Pekin Regional semifinal match.

The Iron (18-4-2) will meet Joliet West or Pekin in Saturday's 11 a.m. championship match.

NCHS (18-4-2) had 13 shots on goal. Iron goalie Emma Spader made seven saves, including a penalty kick in the first half that kept the match scoreless.

U High advances: Two goals from Cassie Trosino helped third-seeded University High down No. 5 Champaign Centennial, 3-1, in a Class 2A Champaign Centennial semifinal match.

The Pioneers (10-9-1) also got a goal from Kendall Bray, while Meredith Heller had an assist. U High outshot the Chargers, 10-6, with Sophie Dorgan making five saves.

U High meets No. 2 Mahomet-Seymour in Saturday's championship match.


Saints cruise: Kayla Stenger contributed three hits and drove in two as top-seeded Central Catholic rolled to an 11-0 victory over PBL in five innings in a Class 2A Central Catholic Regional semifinal game at McGraw Park in Bloomington.

The Saints (26-7) advanced to Saturday's championship game against the winner of Wednesday's semifinal between Tri-Valley and Lexington.

Izzy Vetter (13-1) and Harley Schade combined for a two-hit shutout. Vetter struck out seven in three innings and Schade fanned six in two innings. Charley Sartoris added two hits and three RBIs.

West ties for title: Normal West jumped to an early 6-0 lead and downed Urbana, 8-5, on Senior Day at Maxwell Park in Normal to clinch a tie for the Big 12 Conference title. The Wildcats (19-12), Normal Community and Peoria Notre Dame all finished 9-1 in the league.

Mikayla Fairfield had three hits, including a double and triple, to lead a 12-hit West attack. Savana Mattson (10-8) struck out nine.

NCHS no-hits Richwoods: Mackenzie Leonard and Kaci Shickel combined on a no-hitter as Normal Community blanked Peoria Richwoods, 10-0, in a five-inning Big 12 game at Normal.

Leonard pitched the first three innings, striking out eight, whiel Shickel fanned two in two innings. Reece Johnson, Jessi Grove and Mackenzie Nelson each had two hits for the Iron.

Christiansen, BHS roll: Maddie Christiansen went 5-for-5 and also picked up the win in the circle as Bloomington took a 17-5 victory over host Danville in a Big 12 game. Morgan Muntz had four of the 23 hits for the Raiders (9-18, 5-5), while Katie Whitcomb contributed three hits and three RBIs.

Pontiac edges Ottawa: Amanda Fox fanned nine and walked two during a three-hit, five-inning pitching performance for Pontiac in a 4-2 victory over visiting Ottawa.

Dwight victorious: Abby Edwards struck out 12 in leading second-seeded Dwight to a 6-2 victory over No. 7 Gardner in a Class 1A Dwight Regional semifinal game.

Olympia moves on: Emme Olson and Kate Finchum had two hits apiece for Olympia in a 3-2 victory over Fieldcrest in the Class 2A El Paso-Gridley Regional.

Alivia Tjjaden had three of the Knights' four hits against winning pitcher Kaelyn Leverson, who fanned six and walked one.

Fisher's Eichelberger pitches no-hitter: Sydney Eichelberger fanned nine and walked one while pitching a five-inning no-hitter for Fisher in a 13-0 victory over Heritage in the Class 1A Fisher Regional. Kylie Terven had two hits and three RBIs for the Bunnies.

LeRoy eliminates Blue Ridge: Charly Warlow pitched a four-hit shutout and homered for LeRoy in a 16-3, five-inning victory over Blue Ridge in the Class 1A LeRoy Regional. Taylor Bagnell drove in three runs for the Panthers (21-11).

In her final high school at-bat, Natalie Tharp hit her first career home run and had two RBIs for Blue Ridge.

Tremont moves on: Paige McAllister fanned nine and walked one during a three-hit pitching performance for Tremont in a 5-1 victory over Aledo in the Class 2A Taylor Ridge Regional. Hannah Nguyen had two of Tremont's six hits.


Marti leads West: Jake Marti had three hits and two RBIs as Normal West (20-13) took a 9-2 nonconference victory over visiting Rantoul (15-9).

Brandon Roth also had three hits for the Wildcats, while Will Kafer (4-1) gave up one run in 5.2 innings with seven strikeouts to get the win.

Henry, BHS prevail: Jack Henry provided two hits and two RBIs as Bloomington beat Limestone, 7-4, in a nonconference game at Howard Saar Field.

Reid Rector doubled twice, while Alec Coontz had two hits for BHS (17-14). Coontz (2-0) also picked up the win, with Nick Sharp notching his third save.
