Five Pennsylvania golfers advance out of U.S. Open local qualifier at Country Club of York

The York Dispatch, Pa. — The York Dispatch, Pa.

May 16--Five Pennsylvania golfers slogged through soggy conditions on Wednesday at the Country Club of York to keep alive their dreams of competing in the U.S. Open.

A local qualifier for the Open, featuring more than 70 players, was held on the Donald Ross layout. Only five of the players would earn berths into the next -- and final -- round of sectional qualifying.

Among those moving on were Connor Sheehan of Quarryville and David Hilgers of Hershey, who tied for the day's top score at 1-under-par 69.

Also advancing, after tying for third at even-par 70, were Steven Kluemper of Bethlehem, Craig Hornberger of Lancaster and Alex Blickle of Reading.

The qualifier was open to amateurs and professionals who have a USGA handicap of 1.4 or better.

Those five players still have a chance to compete in the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton, New York, from Thursday through Sunday, June 14-17, provided they can get through sectional qualifying.

York County golfers: There were a number of York County golfers competing, most notably, Central York High School senior Joe Parrini, who tied for seventh at 2-over 72. Parrini struggled on the front nine, making four bogeys and shooting a 3-over-par 38. Parrini has committed to play NCAA Division I college golf at the University of Arizona.

Last year, Parrini advanced into the sectional round by tying for medalist honors at the CCY local qualifier with a 1-under-par 69. He fell short of qualifying for the Open in 2017, however, when he finished 27th in a sectional qualifier at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland.

The other York County golfers competing Thursday were: York's Brandon Knaub, 74, tied for 17th; Spring Grove's Karl Frisk, 76, tied for 32nd; York's Andrew Forjan, 78, tied for 42nd; York's Jonathan Michael Giambalvo, 80, tied for 53rd; Dillsburg's Austin Schreffler, 81, tied for 58th; and York Haven's Michael Disante, 82, tied for 64th. York's Blake Sebring was scheduled to play, but did not compete.
