Houston Dynamo sign Argentine midfielder Tomas MartineztheScore
The Houston Dynamo announced Monday the signing of Argentine midfielder Tomas Martinez on a full transfer from Portuguese side Sporting Clube de Braga, penning the 22-year-old to a Young Designated Player contract. Martinez joins Erick Torres and Alberth Elis as the third DP on the roster.
"Tomas Martinez is a player who we've tracked for quite some time, and after a lengthy process we're pleased to welcome him to the Houston Dynamo," club general manager Matt Jordan said in a statement.
"At just 22 years old, he's a young and very talented midfielder whose profile will add quality and creativity to our team. Tomas is eager to be a part of our club and contribute to the success of our team moving forward."
Martinez started his career in Argentina with River Plate, where he played alongside FC Dallas midfielder Mauro Diaz. He's also represented Argentina at various youth national-team levels, donning the No. 10 shirt. He joined Braga on a full transfer at the start of the 2016-17 season, scoring three goals and recording one assist in 15 appearances.
He is the eighth international in Wilmer Cabrera's side, and the Colombian tactician was pleased to add a player he said is "hungry to play."
"He has a lot of tools, a lot of expectations and he is hungry to consolidate himself as a player," Cabrera offered. "His youth is going to be very good for the team and he is going to bring a good, fresh mentality to work in."
