This Day in History: John Lennon Is Shot December 8, 1980 The 40-year-old former member of the Beatles was shot and killed by obsessed fan Mark David Chapman. The outspoken rock icon was entering his Manhattan apartment when Chapman shot him four times at close range with a .38-caliber revolver. Lennon was rushed to the hospital but died en route. He had given Chapman an autograph earlier in the day. Chapman voluntarily remained at the scene of the shooting until he was arrested by police. Demonstrations of mourning were held all over the world. Deemed a borderline psychotic, Chapman pleaded guilty to murder and remains in Attica prison. Lennon is memorialized in a section of Central Park known as "Strawberry Fields."

According to Markets Insider, before Bill Gates got engaged to his wife in 1993, Warren Buffett tried to persuade him to shell out a cool $400 million on an engagement ring. Buffet talks about it in his book "The Deals of Warren Buffett Volume 2: The Making of a Billionaire." Berkshire Hathaway's boss says that he took the Microsoft founder and Melinda, his future wife, ring shopping at one of his businesses—Borsheims. But Buffett joked, "We didn't have quite as big a day that Sunday as I had hoped." He told Gates that he spent 6% of his net wealth on an engagement ring in 1951, and encouraged Gates to do the same. Gates was worth about $6.2 billion at the time, which is nearly $660 million in today's dollars. Although Gates didn't spring for the $370 million dollar sparkler, they are still married—25 years later.

This Day in History: Pearl Harbor Is Bombed December 7, 1941 360 Japanese warplanes carried out the Sunday morning surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor. 2,400 Americans were killed in the attack and another 1,200 were wounded. Five U.S. battleships, three destroyers and seven other ships were either destroyed or sunk. Japan lost fewer than 100 men during the attack. The next day, following President Franklin Roosevelt's "Infamy" speech, Congress recognized a state of war between the U.S. and Japan. America had entered World War II. Three days later, war was declared on the U.S. by Germany and Italy. The American contribution to the successful Allied war effort cost more than 400,000 American lives.
