Tony Romo: 49ers, Raiders could be really good — or not

The Mercury News — By Cam Inman The Mercury News

July 11-- STATELINE, Nev.-Tony Romo, known for remarkable prescience as CBS' lead NFL analyst, is baffled at what to expect from the 49ers and Raiders this season.

"Both of those teams, they could be really good, or, the league is very tough, from week to week, game to game," Romo said at the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament, where he'll defend his championship this weekend.

Both the 49ers are Raiders are coming off 4-12 seasons.

Romo is two seasons into his career as CBS' breakout analyst, and he's well versed in the 49ers' potential, with Jimmy Garoppolo coming back from knee injury and the pass rush upgraded with Dee Ford and Nick Bosa.

"The 49ers defensive line looks to be outstanding," Romo said. "I know what they have in their schematic advantage on offense with Kyle Shanahan.

"And so if Jimmy's able to play a full season, which I think everyone's excited about seeing, if that happens, hopefully he can play great football and you'll see the 49ers win a lot of games.

"If you can have a great D-line and you can have really good strong quarterback play, it's a difficult combination."

The 49ers have 22-to-1 odds to win their first Super Bowl in 25 years, after opening at 50-to-1, according to Caesers Tahoe. The Raiders' odds opened at 150-to-1 and now are 50-to-1 long shots.

"This is one of those things where it's they could be really good but you just don't know until they put the pieces out there and see how it kind of fits together," Romo said of the Raiders. "We all know Jon Gruden. He's a great football coach and he's going to have them giving everything they have.

"They're a little tougher to kind of decipher right now."

As for his moonlighting on the golf course, Romo is co-favorite with John Smoltz at this weekend's celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe. Romo tees off Friday at 9:42 a.m. with Steph Curry and Justin Timberlake.
